NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has issued a call to action, urging the WNBA and its players' union to accelerate their negotiations on the collective bargaining agreement (CBA). But here's where it gets controversial... Silver hasn't set a firm deadline, but he's emphasizing the need for urgency. He's been through many rounds of collective bargaining and knows that deals often get done at the last minute. "We are awfully close to the 11th hour now," he warns.
The latest proposal from the WNBA, delivered a week ago, includes small increases in revenue sharing and concessions on housing issues. However, the main sticking point remains revenue sharing, with the players seeking around 30% of gross revenue and the league offering over 70% of net revenue after various expenses.
Silver has already hinted at a "big increase" in pay for WNBA players, but the details are still being ironed out. He's encouraged by the increased engagement from both players and team owners, but he wants to see a higher level of urgency to prevent any delays.
And this is the part most people miss... The WNBA's offseason business and regular-season schedule are tightly packed. Delays in negotiations have already pushed back the expansion draft for the new franchises in Portland and Toronto, and the WNBA draft is scheduled for April 13. Training camps are set to open in just two months, and there's a lot to accomplish before then.
"We have to get not one, but two drafts done, and then fit in free agency," Silver explained. "And once the CBA is agreed upon, the lawyers need to finalize the agreement. It's a complex process, and we can't afford any setbacks."
Union president Nneka Ogwumike has assured that a strike isn't imminent, but it's still a possibility. Silver wants to avoid any momentum-draining stoppages, especially after the record-breaking 2025 season that saw unprecedented attendance and television audiences.
"I think it's unfortunate that we're in this situation," Silver said. "The WNBA is on an incredible upward trajectory in terms of fan interest, commercial success, and player popularity. We can't afford to lose that momentum."
