Are you playing a risky game with your expensive smartphone? Modern smartphones are a significant investment, often costing upwards of $1,000. It's only logical to want to protect that investment from accidental damage. But sometimes, we procrastinate when it comes to buying a case or screen protector.
We recently asked our readers about their smartphone protection habits. The results? Well, they're quite revealing!
Do you use a case and/or screen protector on your phone?
Our poll garnered over 5,200 votes, proving that smartphone protection is a hot topic.
The majority of our readers prefer to play it safe. Almost 60% of respondents use both a protective case and a screen protector. Another 28.3% use a case but skip the screen protector – a group I personally belong to. Interestingly, a larger group (7.8%) go without any protection at all, compared to those who only use screen protectors (4.6%).
One reader shared a cautionary tale: "I brought my Pixel 7 Pro to the beach ONCE and ended up with a couple of deep gouges on the screen from a bit of sand in my pocket," wrote tomdauriaff. "Needless to say, I’ll be using a screen protector on my next phone." Another respondent, Bola Akisanya, shared a similar experience, "I had the same issue years ago. It was keys on my pocket that caused the scratches for me. So now I order a screen protector and case even before I get the phone. I always order the same case and screen protector brand and they haven’t failed me yet."
But here's where it gets controversial...
Protection isn't everyone's top priority. Some commenters prioritize the feel of the phone in their hand, disliking screen protectors for diminishing that experience. Ron Cosby noted, "My Pixel 9 Pro is the first phone I’ve never used a case on. I’ve never used a screen protector, [and I -ed] absolutely hate using a screen protector. It’s such a detriment to actually touching and using the screen [and] it takes too much of the experience away to using just a screen."
And this is the part most people miss...
One commenter simply stated, "No excuse," highlighting the strong opinions on this topic.
