US Nationals Urged to Leave Middle East: What You Need to Know Amid Escalating Conflict (2026)

A dire warning has been issued to US citizens in the Middle East: 'Get out now!' The escalating conflict between the US and Israel against Iran has prompted a serious safety alert, urging Americans to leave the region immediately. But here's where it gets controversial... the US State Department hasn't organized any evacuations, leaving many flights grounded or suspended.

On Monday, the State Department advised Americans to leave 17 countries in the Middle East, including Bahrain, Egypt, and even Israel itself. The situation is tense, with Iran retaliating by launching missiles and drones at US-allied nations.

Estimates suggest there are between half a million and a million US nationals living in the region. However, official numbers are unclear as Americans aren't required to register their overseas moves.

US citizens are being advised to stay informed through nearby embassies and consulates, and hotlines have been set up to assist with departures. The US embassy in Jerusalem, though, has stated it cannot directly assist Americans leaving Israel, and will be closed on Tuesday.

Israel has reportedly begun operating shuttles to the Taba Border Crossing with Egypt, but the US embassy has warned against making recommendations either way.

France has offered to fly its citizens back, with Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot saying they could use commercial and military flights. Approximately 400,000 French nationals are believed to be in the Middle East.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has also urged British citizens to register their presence, with around 102,000 Britons so far registering with the UK government. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper estimates there are 300,000 British citizens in the region, many of whom are holidaymakers, transit passengers, or on business trips.

The UK government has used registration schemes before to provide updates during international crises, but the scale of this conflict is unprecedented.

And this is the part most people miss... the potential impact on civilians. With so many nationals from different countries caught in the crossfire, the human cost of this conflict could be devastating.

So, what do you think? Is this a necessary precaution, or an overreaction? Should governments be doing more to protect their citizens abroad? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
