Sovereignty Wins Horse of the Year at Eclipse Awards 2025 | Godolphin Dominates (2026)

A Night to Remember: Godolphin's Dominance and the Eclipse Awards

The Eclipse Awards ceremony, a celebration of excellence in horse racing, witnessed an extraordinary performance by Godolphin, an international racing and breeding powerhouse.

Despite not being a presenting sponsor, Godolphin stole the show at the 55th annual Eclipse Awards on January 22nd. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's stable walked away with five prestigious awards, including the ultimate recognition: Horse of the Year, an honor bestowed upon the remarkable Sovereignty.

But here's where it gets controversial... Sovereignty, a homebred son of Into Mischief, achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Kentucky Derby (G1), Belmont Stakes (G1), and Travers Stakes (G1) under the guidance of trainer Bill Mott. This campaign earned him the title of champion 3-year-old male and the highest honor of Horse of the Year, a crown he wore with 201 of the 220 first-place votes.

And this is the part most people miss... Sovereignty's success wasn't an isolated incident. Godolphin's dominance continued with Cody's Wish's accolades in 2023, showcasing their consistent excellence. Michael Banahan, Godolphin USA's director of bloodstock, expressed the significance of peer recognition, attributing their success to a great stable of horses.

Sovereignty's triumph wasn't the only highlight. Godolphin also took home trophies for Notable Speech, the outstanding turf male, and claimed top honors for breeder and owner. Their horses amassed a record-breaking $22.3 million in earnings, solidifying their position as leading owners for the sixth consecutive year and ninth overall. The operation's breeding prowess earned them a fifth straight breeding award with progeny earnings of $27.2 million.

The evening's international flair added spice to the ceremony. Forever Young, a Japanese superstar, was chosen as the top older dirt male, defeating Sierra Leone in his lone American start, the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). Yoshito Yahagi, the trainer of Real Steel's son, expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the moment as the 'Moment of the Year.'

The Garden State-bred Book'em Danno received the trophy as the champion male sprinter, a proud moment for the New Jersey breeding industry. Owner Jay Briscione celebrated the luck, desire, and great horse that led to their success.

Spendthrift Farm's Ted Noffey dominated the voting for champion 2-year-old male, an impressive feat for a perfect juvenile season. Trained by Todd Pletcher, this Into Mischief offspring named after a creative tweet swap earned 218 of the 220 first-place votes.

The evening began with a tribute to the legendary Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who passed away in June. Starter Bob Duncan and track announcer Trevor Denman received Special Eclipse Awards, and the late turf journalist and historian Edward Bowen was honored with the Eclipse Award of Merit.

Godolphin's dominance at the Eclipse Awards is a testament to their exceptional breeding and racing programs. Their success story continues to inspire and captivate the horse racing world. What do you think? Is Godolphin's dominance a sign of their superior breeding and training, or is there more to it? Share your thoughts in the comments!
