Renesas Launches Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth LE MCUs for IoT Devices (2026)

Renesas unveils its first Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth LE combo MCUs tailored for IoT and connected-home applications. In Tokyo, Renesas Electronics (TSE:6723) announced the RA6W1 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 MCU and the RA6W2 MCU that combines Wi-Fi 6 with Bluetooth Low Energy. These connectivity solutions respond to the growing need for always-on, ultra-low-power IoT devices across smart homes, industrial settings, medical devices, and consumer products. The company also introduced fully integrated modules that include antennas, wireless protocol stacks, and pre-validated RF connectivity to speed up development.

Ultra-Low-Power Operation for Always-Connected IoT
Modern IoT devices benefit from always-on connectivity to improve usability and responsiveness, while pushing power consumption to the minimum to extend battery life or meet eco-friendly standards. The RA6W6 MCUs (Wi-Fi 6) feature Target Wake Time (TWT), enabling longer sleep periods without compromising cloud access or power efficiency. This capability is critical for environmental sensors, smart locks, thermostats, surveillance cameras, and medical monitors that require real-time control, remote diagnostics, and OTA updates.

Both MCU groups are optimized for ultra-low power, drawing as little as 200 nA to 4 μA in sleep mode and under 50 μA in DTIM10 delivery scenarios. The sleepy-connected Wi-Fi approach keeps devices online with minimal energy use, aligning with contemporary energy-efficiency standards.

Scalable RA MCU Architecture with Full Software Support
These MCUs are built around the Arm Cortex-M33 core running at 160 MHz and include 704 KB of SRAM. This setup lets developers create standalone IoT applications with integrated interfaces and analog peripherals, without requiring an external host MCU. Alternatively, designers can pair the RA6W1 or RA6W2 with a host MCU from Renesas’ RA portfolio, using the wireless MCUs as connectivity and networking add-ons. Both models are compatible with Renesas’ Flexible Software Package (FSP) and the e² studio IDE, establishing a scalable platform that promotes software reuse across the RA family.

High-Performance Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6
Supporting both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, the RA6W1 and RA6W2 deliver strong throughput, low latency, and reduced power draw. The dual-band operation intelligently selects the best band under real-time conditions to maintain stable, high-speed connections in crowded environments. Features like OFDMA and TWT boost performance and efficiency, making these MCUs well-suited to dense urban deployments and battery-powered devices.

Security and Interoperability
The RA6W1 and RA6W2 come with robust built-in security features, including AES-256 encryption, secure boot, secure key storage, a true random number generator (TRNG), and XiP with on-the-fly decryption. The RA6W1 is RED-certified (Radio Equipment Directive) to help developers future-proof their designs. Both devices are Matter-ready and certified with Matter 1.4, enabling compatibility across smart-home ecosystems. Renesas supports both MCUs and modules through its Product Longevity Program, offering 15 years of support for MCUs and 10 years for modules.

Availability details: the RA6W1 MCU is now available in FCQFN and WLCSP packages, along with RRQ61001 and RRQ61051 modules. The RA6W2 MCU (BGA) is expected in Q1 2026.
