Rachel Reeves' new road charges could quadruple car taxes, hitting rural electric vehicle owners the hardest. The Chancellor's 3p-per-mile road tax, unveiled in the Autumn Budget, aims to fill the gap in public finances as fuel duty revenues decline. However, research by The Electric Car Scheme indicates that drivers in the South West could face the highest average annual charge at £110.25, with the East Midlands close behind at £105.09. This contrasts with Londoners, who would pay just £33.09 annually, despite the city's high electric vehicle numbers and robust charging infrastructure. Drivers in the North East and North West would face mid-range costs of £82.20 and £83.79, respectively. The biggest tax hike would affect those in smaller rural towns near cities, who would pay an average of £156.51 per year, compared to £76.02 for city and larger town residents. Rural drivers, who typically travel longer distances for work, school, and essential services, would incur higher bills under the pay-per-mile system. The Chancellor's decision has sparked concerns, with The Electric Car Scheme's Thom Groot warning that the new tax risks deterring potential buyers at a critical moment for the electric car market. He emphasizes the need for financial incentives rather than penalties to encourage EV adoption. The policy could potentially slow the shift from early adopters to mainstream drivers, with the Office for Budget Responsibility estimating a reduction in electric vehicle sales by around 440,000 over five years. Despite these concerns, electric cars remain financially viable for most drivers, according to Mr. Groot, who highlights the continued savings and environmental benefits of going electric. A Government spokesperson argues that the new system is fair, as electric vehicle drivers currently pay no fuel duty, while petrol drivers pay around £480 annually. They claim that the new system will make electric vehicles a cheaper and greener choice, as they will pay half the duty of petrol cars.
