Pakistan Idol is at the center of its first major storm this season after Top 16 contestant M Ibrar Shahid abruptly walked off the show, posting a detailed video accusing the production of fostering an unfair, discouraging, and emotionally draining environment. The show’s team, however, has rejected his claims.
Shahid, a National College of Arts (NCA) student who quickly became a crowd favorite, said he exited the set on December 9 of his own accord and would not appear in forthcoming episodes. In a lengthy online video, he walked viewers through what he described as the “last straw.”
“Today is December 9, we had a shoot. But you won’t see me in the next episodes because I left the set today,” he began, noting that he had traveled to the studio that day. He claimed Pakistan Idol had posted a clip of him in which he said the audio was not his real voice, citing heavy autotune that essentially silenced his authentic sound.
Shahid alleged that afterward he faced significant pressure from the production team. “Many people rang me and urged me to remove my comment… from day one they didn’t want to keep me on Pakistan Idol. I’m not sure why. Is it my fault that I want to make good music?”
He alleged that the show’s lead producer warned him of potential legal action should he speak publicly or to the media. “But I’m going to speak, and I’m going to tell the truth,” he stated, accusing the team of exploiting contestants and claiming that many “good contestants” had already been disqualified.
According to Shahid, the experience shattered his trust. “Everything you see on camera is a façade. I can’t act. None of my performances have been scripted—unlike Pakistan Idol,” he asserted. While he praised the judges as “great,” he said the production’s conduct had “broken” him and disheartened supporters from his academic circle and among his peers at NCA.
“I know the step I’ve taken will create problems for me… but you’ll soon witness the power of the people,” he concluded.
Pakistan Idol’s response: allegations are false and defamatory
In a statement provided to Images, the Pakistan Idol team rejected Shahid’s claims, calling them an attempt to undermine the show’s credibility. The statement asserted that the competition maintains the highest standards of governance, integrity, transparency, and fairness at every stage.
“All allegations about the show’s credibility, processes, or contestants are taken very seriously, and we will pursue all legally permissible avenues to protect our reputation, the format, and the interests of every contestant,” the message read.
The production emphasized that it adheres to the audio-visual standards set by Fremantle, the owners of the global Idol format, and that everything from auditions to broadcast follows internationally benchmarked guidelines.
Describing Shahid’s remarks as “false, misleading, and defamatory,” the statement argued they undermine the professionalism of the production team, the integrity of the judging process, and the hard work of fellow contestants who are competing in good faith. It noted that Shahid voluntarily withdrew and that the matter is being handled through appropriate legal channels.

Reality competitions often bring heightened emotions, but Shahid’s public walkout paired with accusations of manipulation and threats has stirred strong reactions among fans, who flooded his comment sections with polarized opinions.
