Recent reports indicate that Oracle plans to add a staggering $38 billion to its already substantial debt, fueling its expansion into AI infrastructure. This news has triggered a sell-off of Oracle bonds, signaling growing investor concern.
Oracle, when contacted for comment, did not immediately respond.
The company has been pouring billions into cloud and AI infrastructure this year. With a debt load of approximately $104 billion, including $18 billion in bonds, Oracle is currently spending more than it earns from its operations. This financial strategy is heavily reliant on future profits, particularly from contracts with AI startups like OpenAI.
Lisa Shalett, chief investment officer of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, noted that many major tech companies are borrowing to fund their capital expenditures while simultaneously maintaining stock buyback programs.
But here's where it gets controversial... This week, the market's confidence in Oracle's strategy seemed to waver. CNBC reported that the company intends to take on an additional $38 billion in debt.
As a result, the price of Oracle's bonds has dipped. For instance, bonds maturing in 2033 with a 4.9% coupon have seen their yields increase by more than three basis points in the last two weeks. Similarly, newer bonds maturing in 2032 with a 4.8% coupon have experienced a yield increase of almost two basis points in just one week.
Stu Novick, a tech sector credit analyst at Gimme Credit, observed, "There's definitely some selling pressure." He added that the sheer size of the numbers has many investors questioning the company's path to profitability in this arena.
And this is the part most people miss... Oracle's bold move into AI, while promising, is a high-stakes gamble. The company's heavy investment and reliance on debt raise critical questions about its long-term financial health.
