But here's where it gets truly historic... LOUDNESS didn't just emerge; they conquered. Back in 1983, they were already making waves in North America and Europe. The following year, they etched their names in the annals of music history by becoming the first Japanese band to sign with a major international record label, Atlantic Records. Imagine that! They also blazed a trail by being the first Japanese act to grace the stage at the iconic Madison Square Garden and even opened for none other than MÖTLEY CRÜE. Their groundbreaking album, "Thunder In The East" (1985), and the smash hit single "Crazy Nights" weren't just popular; they charted impressively, hitting No. 4 in Japan and securing a respectable No. 74 on the U.S. Billboard chart. This was monumental for J-rock!
And this is the part most people miss... While the band's journey has seen lineup shifts since 1981, the current powerhouse features three original members: the unmistakable vocals of Minoru Niihara, the shredding guitar of Akira Takasaki, and the solid basslines of Masayoshi Yamashita. Joining them is drummer Masayuki Suzuki, who has been a driving force since 2009. It's a blend of seasoned veterans and dedicated talent, keeping the LOUDNESS spirit alive and kicking.
Sadly, the metal community lost a vital piece of LOUDNESS's foundation when original drummer Munetaka Higuchi passed away in 2008 after a courageous battle with liver cancer. His contributions are an indelible part of the band's sound.
For a period after Minoru Niihara's departure in 1988, the band welcomed American singer Mike Vescera, followed by Masaki Yamada of EZO fame. However, the magic of reunion happened in 2001 when Takasaki brought back the original LOUDNESS lineup, including Niihara, Yamashita, and Higuchi, for a period that fans still cherish.
