Matxin Unveils UAE's Final Giro d'Italia Rider: Narváez's Return in Doubt
The UAE Team Emirates has finally unveiled its complete Giro d'Italia lineup, with manager Joxean Matxin confirming that Ecuadorian national champion Jhonatan Narváez is the missing piece. Narváez, a classics specialist, was the defending champion at the Tour Down Under, showcasing his exceptional form by matching teammate Jay Vine's race-winning attack in the Corkscrew on stage 2.
However, the team's success took a turn for the worse when crashes began to take their toll. Narváez crashed on stage 4, resulting in compression fractures in his vertebrae. Vegard Stake Laengen and Mikkel Bjerg also crashed out of the race, and the winner, Jay Vine, ended the race with a broken wrist after colliding with a kangaroo.
Matxin revealed that Narváez's return to the peloton will take at least two months, ruling him out of the cobbled Classics. The Spaniard expressed optimism about Narváez's potential participation in the Giro d'Italia, stating, 'I think — within the limits of my optimism — he should be able to make the start of the Giro d’Italia.'
This confirmation comes as a relief, as Narváez's presence was crucial to the team's strategy. Back in early December, CyclingUpToDate had predicted the lineup, including João Almeida, Adam Yates, Jay Vine, Igor Arrieta, Florian Vermeersch, Jan Christen, and António Morgado. Matxin had initially kept the riders' schedule private, but Narváez's inclusion as the eighth man is now confirmed.
Despite his absence from the Classics, Narváez's role at the Giro d'Italia is still uncertain. Matxin emphasized the focus on Narváez's recovery, stating, 'Let’s first focus on whether he can make the Giro — that would already be perfect. But maybe he’ll also make the Ardennes Classics.'
With Narváez's return in doubt, the team's strategy for the Giro d'Italia remains a topic of speculation. The Ecuadorian's potential absence from the Classics and his limited time to recover could impact the team's overall performance. As the season progresses, fans and analysts alike await further updates on Narváez's recovery and his role in the team's upcoming races.
