Inggris "Abaikan" Peringatan AS: Starmer Dekati China untuk Ekonomi, Trump Beri Peringatan Keras! (2026)

Is the UK Ignoring US Warnings on China? A Bold Move or a Risky Strategy?

In a move that has sparked both intrigue and controversy, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer embarked on a high-stakes visit to China this week, aiming to mend diplomatic ties and bolster economic cooperation. But here's where it gets controversial: this comes despite stark warnings from US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly cautioned against deepening ties with Beijing.

Following a three-hour bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Starmer declared that UK-China relations are now 'strong and robust.' He also highlighted the significant economic benefits the UK stands to gain from this rapprochement. This optimistic outlook, however, was met with a sharp rebuke from Trump. 'Yes, it’s very dangerous for them to do that,' Trump told reporters ahead of the premiere of Melania at the Kennedy Center, as reported by the BBC.

Trump didn’t stop at the UK; he extended similar warnings to Canada, stating, 'It’s even more dangerous, in my opinion, for Canada.' He added, 'Canada is not in good shape. They’re in very bad shape, and you can’t look to China as the answer.' Earlier, on January 25, 2026, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Canada if it proceeded with an economic agreement with China, which was finalized during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Beijing in mid-January.

The UK’s Stance: Unfazed by Trump’s Pressure

Despite Trump’s warnings, the UK appears undeterred. The UK Prime Minister’s office revealed that Washington was fully aware of Starmer’s travel plans and objectives. Starmer proceeded with his four-day visit, attending the UK-China Business Forum at the Bank of China in Beijing. He described his meeting with Xi as 'warm and productive,' emphasizing that the UK has much to offer. 'We engaged warmly and made some real progress,' Starmer added.

This 'warmth' translated into several key agreements, including a visa-free travel pact and reduced tariffs on whisky. Additionally, AstraZeneca announced a £10.9 billion investment to build a manufacturing facility in China. Starmer praised these deals, particularly the visa-free policy and lower whisky tariffs, as 'crucial access points' symbolizing mutual trust and respect.

Beyond trade, further agreements were reached on tackling organized crime and illegal immigration. Chris Torrens, Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce in China, hailed Starmer’s visit as a success, noting, 'It makes sense for the UK to focus on China, as it’s one of its largest trading partners.'

Starmer’s visit is part of a broader trend of Western leaders engaging with China between December 2025 and January 2026, despite Trump’s fluctuating threats of export tariffs and his ambitions to acquire Greenland. Speaking to journalists en route to China, Starmer expressed confidence that the UK could strengthen its economic ties with China without alienating the US, citing the long-standing UK-US partnership in defense, security, intelligence, and trade.

'The relationship the UK has with the US is one of our closest,' Starmer remarked, also highlighting Trump’s September 2025 visit to the UK, which brought $150 billion in US investments. After Beijing, Starmer is scheduled to visit Shanghai before heading to Tokyo to meet Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Will It Work? Skepticism from the US

Before Trump weighed in, US Trade Secretary Howard Lutnick cast doubt on Starmer’s efforts. 'China is the largest exporter, and they’re very, very difficult when you try to export to them,' he told reporters. 'So, good luck to the UK trying to export to China. It’s highly unlikely,' Lutnick added. When asked if Trump might impose tariffs on the UK as he did with Canada, Lutnick replied, 'I think Canada played things a bit differently. Unless the UK Prime Minister challenges the US and says very difficult things, I doubt it will happen.'

Domestic Criticism and Broader Implications

Starmer’s trip has also faced criticism from opposition MPs, marking the first visit by a UK leader to China since 2018. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp accused Starmer of 'going to Beijing to kowtow to President Xi,' and claimed the government was trading UK national security for 'economic crumbs' from China’s table.

And this is the part most people miss: While the UK seeks to balance its relationships with both the US and China, the question remains: Can it truly navigate these complex geopolitical waters without alienating either superpower? As global tensions rise, this delicate dance will undoubtedly shape the UK’s future on the world stage. What do you think? Is the UK making a wise move, or is it playing with fire?
