Get ready to be inspired by a remarkable transformation! In the heart of the Cotswolds, a humble cottage has been given a new lease of life, and it's a story of creativity and resourcefulness.
A Blank Canvas with Potential
This charming cottage, nestled at the edge of Laura Berkeley-Hawkes' Cotswolds barn, started as a simple 1990s outbuilding. It lacked the architectural charm of its neighboring 18th-century house, but that's where the magic began. Gracy, Laura's daughter and design partner, saw an opportunity. 'It had no history to lean on,' she says, 'but that meant we could create something truly unique.'
Exploring Masculine Elegance
The design duo decided to contrast the romantic femininity of the barn with a more masculine and elemental tone for the cottage. The color palette reflects this, with earthy tones of brown and green, and warm neutrals creating a cozy atmosphere. Natural materials like wood, marble, linen, and wool add to the raw, unpolished feel. 'Everything here is authentic,' Gracy notes, 'a far cry from the shiny perfection of some interiors.'
A Connection to the Land
The cottage's reclaimed oak floorboards, sourced from old European agricultural buildings, became a key element. 'They tie the cottage to the farming history of the area,' Laura explains, 'and visually link it to the main house, creating a sense of unity.'
Maximizing Space with Comfort
The cottage's small size presented a challenge, but one that Laura and Gracy embraced. 'We sketched countless layouts,' Laura recalls, 'until we found the perfect configuration.' Every inch was optimized, including a clever utility room tucked under the stairs. The ground floor features a timber kitchen with cabinet fronts made from the darkest oak boards, creating a woodland-inspired look. Opposite, a dining area with a unique 19th-century table and antique chairs sits beneath a vibrant artwork, adding a pop of color to the otherwise calm interior.
A Cozy Retreat
Upstairs, the bedroom and shower room continue the thoughtful design. The slope of the roof influenced the decoration, and a unique feature is the placement of the bathtub in the bedroom. 'After a brisk country walk, there's nothing better than a warm bath,' Gracy says. 'We made it work by utilizing every inch of space.'
This cottage is a testament to the power of design. It stands as a counterpoint to the barn, distinct yet connected, a true reflection of the designers' vision. As Gracy puts it, 'It's like two sides of the same story, each with its own unique charm.'
And here's the intriguing part: How do you feel about the unconventional placement of the bathtub? It's a bold move, but does it work? Let's discuss in the comments!
