The Indianapolis Colts announced they waived kicker Michael Badgley on Tuesday. Badgley, who joined the team midseason after Spencer Shrader suffered a season-ending ACL and MCL injury while attempting a point-after-touchdown in Week 5 against the Las Vegas Raiders, played in seven games for the Colts. Over his eight-year NFL career, Badgley converted 10 of 11 field goal attempts and 18 of 21 extra points.
However, Badgley’s stint with the Colts ended on a sour note as he missed his third PAT of the season during the Week 12 loss to the Houston Texans.
Before releasing Badgley, Colts special teams coordinator Brian Mason spoke to reporters on Tuesday, outlining that the team would evaluate “all kicker options that (they) possibly have.” He emphasized the need to maximize scoring opportunities, ensure strong cohesion with the special teams unit, and align with the head coach’s game plan.
Mason also highlighted the evaluation criteria for Week 14: they’re seeking an experienced kicker who can handle pressure, deliver consistent PATs, and make kicks within 50 yards. The goal is to identify a reliable option for the next five weeks, extending into the playoffs, rather than chasing spectacular long-range kicks or unreliable performances.
