The Marquez Brothers: A Tale of Two Crashes and a Surprising Lead
The first day of MotoGP's pre-season test in Thailand kicked off with a bang, quite literally, as Alex Marquez took the lead over his brother, Marc, despite the latter's two crashes. Marc's day started with a sudden fall at the final corner during his first flying lap, followed by another tumble at Turn 5, albeit a more gentle one.
Ducati, still fine-tuning its aero package for the season, acknowledged that Marc's confidence took a hit from these early mishaps. However, he picked up the pace by the end of the day, finishing just a tenth of a second behind his brother, who has been the standout rider so far in the pre-season.
But here's where it gets interesting: Franco Morbidelli-led Ducati dominated the top three spots, with Marco Bezzecchi leading Aprilia in fourth. The lead Honda, piloted by Johann Zarco, was only 0.005s behind, closely followed by the lead KTM, ridden by Maverick Vinales, at 0.078s.
Jack Miller set the best time for a V4 Yamaha bike in the morning session, which featured a 1-2 finish for Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin. However, it was Fabio Quartararo who caused a stir, showing his middle finger after an on-track incident. When asked about this, team manager Massimo Meregalli stated, "As I said before, the rider cannot wait." He further explained, "We knew from the start that it would be a learning process, especially in the beginning."
Meregalli remains optimistic, believing that Ducati's performance will improve gradually as the season progresses. "I want to believe that from the second part of the season, we will see better results."
