This alarming possibility has been highlighted by the head of France’s Institut Pasteur's respiratory infections center.
Over the past few years, the highly dangerous strain known as avian influenza or bird flu has led to the mass culling of hundreds of millions of birds worldwide. These drastic measures have caused significant disruptions in food supplies and pushed up prices, yet actual human infections remain exceedingly rare so far.
But here’s where it gets controversial and potentially dangerous: experts warn that the real threat lies in the virus adapting to mammals, especially humans. Should it mutate to enable human-to-human transmission, it could ignite a pandemic of unprecedented scale. Marie-Anne Rameix-Welti, the medical director at the Institut Pasteur’s respiratory infections center, explained to Reuters, “Our greatest concern is that the virus might adapt to mammals and become capable of spreading between people, transforming it into a pandemic pathogen.”
The Institut Pasteur holds a notable place in global health efforts—they were among the first European institutions to develop and distribute COVID-19 detection tests, sharing their protocols with the World Health Organization and laboratories across the globe.
Unlike the common seasonal flu strains, such as H1 and H3, which most people have antibodies against, there are currently no available defenses against H5 bird flu strains that infect both birds and mammals. This is similar to the early days of COVID-19, when humanity lacked immunity. Rameix-Welti emphasizes that, unlike COVID-19, which primarily vulnerable populations are affected, flu viruses have the potential to cause severe illness and death even among healthy individuals, including children.
