The Alaska Nanooks swimming team has made a splash at the Northwest Collegiate Invite, finishing an impressive fifth overall! But here's where it gets interesting: the 'Nooks achieved this feat with an incredible 63 season bests and 22 personal records. That's a whole lot of hard work and dedication!
Let's dive into some of the standout performances. In the 200-yard backstroke, McKenzie Fazio and Charisma Watkins showed their skills, competing in the C Final, while Mariia Sirotinskaia took on the D Final. Fazio's time of 2:07.06 earned her 19th place, and Watkins followed closely with a 2:12.13. Sirotinskaia's performance in the D Final was equally impressive, finishing in 2:17.91.
Janci Pangburn made a splash in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 52.86 and securing 14th place in her B Final heat. Ali Pecore and McKenzie Fazio also shone in the C Final, finishing 19th and 21st, respectively. Talia Wentz led the way in her D Final heat with a time of 53:23, an achievement worth celebrating!
One of the most exciting moments came when Dorka Dancsok took second place in the 200-yard breaststroke, missing the win by just 0.68 seconds! Her time of 2:18.81 secured another B Cut for the team. Macy Ahrens and Sariah Rodgers also represented the 'Nooks in this event, placing 15th and 26th, respectively.
Cosima Schmiedel matched Dancsok's success with a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly, clocking in at 2:07.88. Giorgia Merlo led her B Final heat with a swift 2:10.13, securing ninth place. MacKenzie O'Keefe and Kaidence Sampsel also made their mark, placing 25th and 26th.
The Nanooks continued their strong showing in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with the team of Fazio, Dancsok, Pangburn, and Pecore swimming to a seventh-place finish in 3:34.37. In the 1650-yard freestyle, Kitti Marton led the way for the 'Nooks, finishing a close eighth with a time of 17:46.40. Macy Ahrens, Guielsie Borbon, and Mariia Sirotinskaia rounded out the event, placing 17th, 19th, and 20th, respectively.
And this is the part most people miss: the Nanooks' success isn't just about individual achievements. It's a team effort, with each swimmer contributing to the overall success. Their hard work and dedication have paid off, and they're ready to keep swimming towards even greater heights.
So, what's next for the Alaska Nanooks? They'll be back in the pool on December 15th for the UNLV Invitational, their final meet of 2025. Will they continue their winning streak? Only time will tell.
