AI Dating Revolution: Hinge CEO's New Venture, Overtone (2026)

A New Chapter in the World of Dating Apps: AI Takes Center Stage! Justin McLeod, the former CEO of Hinge, is stepping down to embark on an exciting new venture: Overtone, an AI-powered dating app. This move signals a significant shift in the dating app landscape, with AI poised to play a more prominent role.

Match Group, the powerhouse behind popular dating platforms like Hinge, Tinder, and OkCupid, is backing Overtone with pre-seed funding, planning to secure a substantial ownership stake. Overtone was incubated within Hinge, with McLeod and his team dedicated to developing the concept. The app is envisioned as an early-stage dating service, leveraging AI and voice tools to foster more thoughtful and personal connections.

But here's where it gets controversial... McLeod isn't alone in recognizing the potential of AI in revolutionizing dating. Whitney Wolfe Herd, the founder of Bumble, has expressed her ambition to create the "world’s smartest and most emotionally intelligent matchmaker." Last year, she even proposed the idea of singles using AI personas to represent themselves in the dating world.

It's still unclear exactly how Overtone will distinguish itself from other dating apps. The market is saturated with platforms experimenting with AI features to address the growing dissatisfaction with online dating, especially among Gen Z users.

And this is the part most people miss... Tinder has reported nine consecutive quarters of decline in paying subscribers, and has increasingly integrated AI features to improve user matching. Hinge recently launched "Convo Starters," an AI feature designed to help users initiate more engaging conversations. Both Tinder and Facebook Dating have experimented with AI-powered matching to combat "swipe fatigue."

Ceding control of your dating experience is one thing, but other attempts at integrating AI into these apps get even more dubious.

Match CEO Spencer Rascoff revealed that a key feature in Tinder's upcoming 2026 product experience will be "Chemistry." With the user's permission, this feature will access users’ camera rolls to gather more information. McLeod founded Hinge in 2011, with a focus on relationship-building rather than casual encounters. The app, projected to reach $1 billion in revenue by 2027, was acquired by Match in 2019. Jackie Jantos, Hinge's president and chief marketing officer, will take over as CEO. McLeod will remain in an advisory role at Hinge through March.

This summer, TechCrunch spoke to Jantos at SXSW London about Hinge's strategy for engaging Gen Z, a demographic increasingly disillusioned with online dating.

"This is a generation that has grown up with a deep understanding of how digital experiences are created and what they are trying to get out of them," Jantos said.

According to Jantos, Gen Z values transparency and authenticity from digital brands. While this might seem at odds with the growing reliance on AI, Hinge's AI recommendation feature, launched in March, led to a 15% increase in matches and contact exchanges in the first quarter of this year.

Based on Jantos's comments, Hinge plans to continue investing in these features under her leadership.

"Our focus will remain on intentional innovation that is grounded in culture, creativity, and a deep understanding of how people connect today," Jantos stated.
